Where's the best place to collect sea shells in Southern California?
I'm going to southern California in December, and want to know the best place to collect sea shells. Especially sand dollars. I only want to collect if it's allowed and safe. Also I'd like it to be with in 3 hours of Los Angeles. Thanks.
Huge beach fan here!! 
I go to beaches & collect only the shells that find interesting. I have gone to several beaches here in SOCAL & I spend a lot of my time at the beach...awww yes the benefit of living in SOCAL
Anyways......honestly the best way to try and collect shells would be to go to the beach early. I tend to go around 3-5pm but by that time there is so many ppl around the beaches that if there were any left they are either broken. Take into consideration that our beaches are always packed w/ tourist, residents etc. So the likelihood of finding shells arent that high. You can try buying some but that might take away the whole "I came to visit SOCAL & walked the beaches collecting shells" experience. I know you said SOCAL, but I have been to San Diego...gorgeous beaches & I have found it to be the best place ever to collect shells. I even found a sand dollar, have broken though 
a small horseshoe shell (broken in half as well)
Further down Malibu, those areas are highly secluded (mainly the sand area close to water) bc the surfers are just in the water most of the time so theres hardly any ppl walking the shoreline which means less likely shells will be fully broken.....
