Have there been any Eurypterids found in WV?
A couple of days ago I was digging in a cliff near my home and I believe I found a eurypterid perserved in pyrite and it was inj the needmore shale formation. The specimen wasn't very well preserved but it wasn't flattened like most that have been found. The pincers were not seen if they were there but upon moving the flaky shale layers it could have been very possible that they could have been disturbed and broken off before I noticed them. There is still more left of it in the cliff but It breaks practically into powder upon removal. You can see the sections of its body and it looks just like a eurypterid would. It's only about 1 1/2" wide and without the whole specimen I couldn't tell you the length but I took out about 3-4 inches of it and there's probably still a couple of inches left that I may be able to remove. I haven't heard of any ever found in WV before and I've been researching. What should I do with the specimen?
From what I remember from years ago, the Eurypterids from the Silurian were found in the middle of PA. The line of late Silurian surface regions does appear to extend into some of WV and it is definitely likely. I took a quick glance online and did not find any specific findings, but I did find a site that might help you. If you were searching in one of the highlighted regions, its very likely that it is a Eurypterid.
From your description it sounds as though you already know a fair amount on the subject and your identification seems solid.
