Would this procedure work with a substance that floats or disolves?
Fill cylinder with to the 50-mL mark.
Carefully place the pyrite into the cylinder of water. Try not to spill any of the water
Read the level of the water on the scale of the graduated ylinder. Record the level of the water with the pyrite in it.
Calculate the volume of water displace by the pyrtie. To do this, subtract the volume of water without the pyrite from the volume of water with the pyrite. Record your answer.
Calculate the density of the pyritbe by using this forumla
Density= Mass ÷ Volume of water dsiplaced by mineral
(note: density is expressas g/cm3 <-----cubed
remove the water and minereal from the cylinder.
If it floats, it is not displacing the full volume of the **, just however much is submerged. However, dissolving substances should displace the water, but if you need to reuse them, you'll need to evaporate away the water.
