for how long has Mars been a red planet?
looking at so many pictures from the mars rovers, it looks like red dust ( iron oxide) covers everything... but under that we see various patches of white soil, the rocks when brushed off are not usually red... maybe the red covering is more recent from a large iron rich volcanic eruption , spread around by the Martian wind. maybe a million years ago or so..
Yeah, yeah, maybe a million years ago. Sure.
C'mon. Aren't you ever going to research this stuff before you start "speculating" on what the truth is? Wikipedia is free. Try reading up.
Mars has been red for as long as it had iron and water and oxygen around. Somehow, that has to compute to a whole lot more than a million years -- more like 3.5 billion years.
Much of the surface is deeply covered by a fine iron(III) oxide dust that has the consistency of talcum powder. Current models of the planet's interior imply a core region approximately 1,480 kilometres (920 mi) in radius, consisting primarily of iron with about 15–17% sulfur.
