Why can't covalent network substance dissolve in water?
E.g. Sand and diamond. I understand that diamond is non-polar but sand?!
Iodine is slightly soluble and yet it is non-polar (diatomic)-- I'm getting really confused.
Sand is silicon dioxide. So, it looks kind of like this:
O=S=O
There are dipoles, but they're balanced on both sides. Both oxygen atoms are highly electronegative, therefore, there's an intense force holding the silicon and oxygen atoms together.
Iodine is non-polar, you are quite correct, but it is not nearly as electronegative as oxygen is. The dipole on water (on the oxygen end) is a lot stronger than the bond holding the two iodine atoms together; thus, this allows the I atoms to break that bond, and form an aqueous iodine solution.
